I Started Duck Hooking the Ball Off the Tee… HELP!!!
There’s nothing quite as frustrating in golf as stepping up to the tee, feeling confident, and then… WHAM—the ball goes shooting left in a vicious duck hook. If you’re finding yourself consistently duck hooking the ball off the tee, don’t panic! It’s a common issue that can be fixed with a little technique adjustment.
At Golf Biz Canada, we’ve seen it all—and our Head PGA Teaching Professional, Katrina Kelly, is here to help you get your swing back on track!
What Is a Duck Hook?
A duck hook is a low, left-turning shot (for right-handed golfers) that starts straight but then curves dramatically left. It’s typically caused by a combination of grip, swing path, and clubface position at impact.
Why Am I Duck Hooking?
Overactive Hands: If your hands are rolling over too quickly through impact, it closes the clubface, causing that hook.
Swing Path:
An inside-to-out swing path can exaggerate the ball’s curve, especially if paired with a closed clubface.
Grip Issues:
Gripping the club too tightly or with a grip that’s too strong (rotated too far to the right for a righty) can lead to a closed clubface at impact.
How to Fix It:
Check Your Grip: Lighten up! Try using a neutral grip where both hands sit square on the club, without too much rotation.
Slow Down Your Hands:
Focus on controlling your hand rotation through impact. You want a square clubface, not one that’s slamming shut.
Swing Path:
Work on swinging along the target line or slightly inside-to-out. Over-exaggerating this can lead to that nasty hook.
